Govenor Bello Commissions Road Repair Equipment

The Governor of Kogi State, Alhaji Yahaya Bello, has said in response to the economic realities of today, his administration is empowering its agencies to do the work that would have been given out to contractors in the past. The Governor said this while commissioning equipment purchased by the government for the Kogi State Road Maintenance Agency (KOGROMA) in Lokoja on Friday, November 3rd, 2017.

He said the meagre resources of the state has made him to consider smart ways of saving money, one of which is to carry out road repairs using the engineers and labour already in the employment of the state government.

"We have had to do a lot of out-of-the-box thinking just to ensure that the little resources available are used for the benefit of the majority," Governor Bello said. "That is why we have stretched our purse to bring out the funds to buy these equipment for KOGROMA so that all road repair works will be done in-house.

"We will buy more as our finances permit. But in the meantime, let us use these ones provided judiciously, so that we extract maximum value from them.

Speaking earlier, Managaing Director of KOGROMA, Engineer Img-Adego, said 58  roads had been successfully repaired by the agency since its establishment in 2013. He said since the beginning of the present administration, more than five major roads in bad condition have received due and prompt attention from the agency.

He thanked the Governor for adding one excavator, one motor grader, one backhoe loader, two site dumpers and one pnuematic-tyred roller to the agency's assets.

"I wish to commend His Excellency for graciously approving the procurement of additional road construction equipment for the straightening of the agency and improved operational effectiveness and better delivery," he said.

"Undoubtedly, today's commissioning is a testimony to His Excellency's dogged determination and commitment to the well-being of Kogites the general road users despite very limited resources available - inline with the New Direction Agenda."

He added that Direct Labour intervention by his agency in road repairs was always cheaper than sums quoted by contractors.

The Kogi State Commissioner for Works, Housing and Urban Development, Enginner Abdulmumuni Sadiq, said the equipment being commissioned at a time when the state is addressing the infrastructural deficit the state is facing. He commended the Governor for taking the step and charged KOGROMA to do its work diligently.
